Group 1 Moir Stakes Preview
The Moir Stakes is a Group 1 race run over 1000m at Moonee Valley. The $500,000.00 prize pool ensures that this race is a serious tussle of the nation’s best sprinters.
What a cracking field! Multiple Group 1 winners, old stagers, the world’s highest-rated sprinter and an up and coming 3YO.
The speed looks hot and as is always the case with these sprints the speed maps can be difficult but go a long way to helping decide the outcome of the race.
We’ve done our best to map where the horses will likely be heading after they jump out of the gates.
**Updated, Victorian stewards alerted everyone via Twitter today that Extreme Choice will be ridden for cover indicating he might not be as forward as he was at previous Victorian starts.
Buffering won this race last year (see below) and is one of the most loved horses in Australia. He’s got five wins from seven starts at the distance and five wins at Moonee Valley. His recent trial up in Brisbane was fantastic and he’ll be tough to catch particularly if the track is favouring on pace runners.
Extreme Choice is the sole 3YO in the field and he is resuming off a Blue Diamond winning preparation. His recent trials were excellent and he has put on some weight and developed into a much stronger looking horse. As mentioned above the stable has indicated they’d like to ride him with cover which means he might try and take a sit three-wide and try and slot in from the wide barrier behind the likes of Buffering, Redzel, Heatherly and Ball Of Muscle.
Heatherly won very well first-up at this track before bombing the start second-up that basically cost her the race. She then had a jump out in Melbourne where she was slowly away once again and punters are certainly wary of it happening again. She maps to get the perfect run however, sitting in behind Buffering and if it’s a testing tempo we love the fact she has the platform of two runs behind her.
Lucky Hussler is an absolutely brilliant horse who is probably better suited over 1200m than he is 1000m and first-up here he might find them a bit slick. He’ll have to jump very well to stay in touch and might have too much work to do with Chautauqua likely looming on his outside.
Chautauqua we have to save the best for last. This bloke will be a popular play amongst Fantasy Racing enthusiasts and for good reason. He’s won seven of his last 10 races and placed in the three he missed out on winning. He has a booming finish and is fresh off a breathtaking win in Hong Kong. He’ll get back and be very strong late, at the current odds of $2.30 we see little value given the start he may be spotting the field and have assessed his chances of winning at 40% which results in odds of $2.50
TopBetta Tournament Plays
Back Heatherly to place, you’ll get better odds for her to run in the first three than you will Chautauqua to win and there will be a lot of tournament players backing the Big Grey.
These are the type of contrarian plays that can be the difference in TopBetta racing tournaments!
