ROYAL Randwick plays host once again to the mighty mare Winx on Saturday in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes. While that event looks a procession (barring the drama of the Warwick Stakes!), there’s plenty of other betting opportunities on the card.
The Rail is out six metres on Saturday with a Good track once again being served up. We expect the recent trend of fairer Sydney tracks to continue.
Here are our five selected bets on the card.
ROYAL RANDWICK
Track: Good 4
Rail: +6m Entire Circuit
Weather: Fine
RACE 3 #3 More To Gain @ $3.70
Lightly-raced gelding More To Gain looks a leading contender in the third event over a mile. He was beaten less than a length when resuming over 1350m against a better quality field, a result which backed up his two wins and three seconds from five runs last prep. He generally improves second up and may just have too much dash in his legs for the favourite Jaminzah who is deep into his prep.
Race 4 #8 Makfi Lass @ $7.50/$2.60
The country horses tend to clap it on in the Highway and in the big field here it doesn’t look much different. That leaves the door open for a strong horse like Makfi Lass to storm over the top. She has been racing consistently of late, with good efforts at Scone backed up by a second to the smart Care To Think at this venue. Four weeks off is a slight query but the freshen may allow her to sprint too well for her tired rivals if a clear run presents.
Race 5 #3 Spieth @ $2.80
The TAB robots put Spieth up at $3.50 after acceptances in the Concorde and it didn’t last. He was a strong recent Warwick Farm trialler and his first up second to Terravista at Group 1 level in the Autumn reads well here. Traffic was his worst enemy in the Spring but the small field here means he’ll be sitting behind a solid tempo without many horses to pass. Can be running over the top of them.
Caulfield Racing Tips for 2nd September
Race 6 #5 Alizee @ $3.20
The Silver Shadow is the key form line here with Formality (winner), Alizee (2nd 02L) and Champagne Cuddles (3rd 0.4L) all going around again in a small-ish field. Alizee was second up that day and raced keenly outside the leader before peaking on her run. Third up here today – one extra run than her main rivals – and the inside gate give her the chance to lead Formality to the turn and be the one to run down. Hugh Bowman on is a huge switch.
Race 8 #1 Happy Clapper @ $5.00
Versatile galloper Happy Clapper can be winning the Tramway first up. Twelve months ago he resumed in this event and ran fifth on a Heavy track against better opposition. But this time in he’s trialled magnificently for this and a superb Autumn preparation is perhaps a guide that he is going better than ever. The speed map has him enjoying a cost midfield run and with class and runs on the board on his side looks tough to hold out.
